Sweden’s Ex-Premier Considers Sending Troops to Greenland

(MENAFN) Sweden’s former Prime Minister and current opposition leader Magdalena Andersson has indicated she is open to the idea of dispatching Swedish military personnel to Greenland as part of a wider European initiative to assist Denmark, which governs the self-ruling territory and has resisted US acquisition proposals.

Andersson, who heads the Social Democrats and served as prime minister between 2021 and 2022, told a Swedish newspaper on Sunday that she was “no stranger to increased military presence in Greenland,” including the involvement of Swedish forces.

“It is of course important that Sweden and all European countries stand firmly behind Greenland and Denmark, and that we in Sweden are now also considering what we can do, as Denmark has asked for support,” she stated during the annual People and Armed Forces National Conference in Salen.

Her comments came after the youth branch of her party suggested deploying EU forces to Greenland to counter what it described as hostile rhetoric from President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly argued that the Arctic island should become part of the United States.

When asked directly if Swedish soldiers could be sent, Andersson responded: “Of course, together with others,” emphasizing that such a step would depend on an official request from Denmark and Greenland.

Meanwhile, Sweden’s current Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, also present at the conference, cautioned that smaller nations are increasingly exposed as the rules-based global order faces mounting strain.

“The threats to the rules-based world order are greater than in decades,” he remarked, adding that Washington’s recent actions in Venezuela and its stance toward Denmark and Greenland were “very serious.”
