Trump Appoints New Special Envoy to Greenland

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has designated Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as his special envoy to Greenland, a territory under Danish control that Trump previously suggested should be integrated into the United States.

Landry, who took office last year, “understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security,” Trump declared in his Truth Social announcement on Sunday. The Republican governor clarified that his new unpaid assignment will not interfere with his gubernatorial responsibilities. He pledged to work “to make Greenland a part of the US,” as he expressed on X.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen criticized the move, describing it as coming “out of nowhere” and “completely unacceptable,” according to comments reported by a TV channel. He added that his ministry will summon the US ambassador in Copenhagen to seek clarification. Meanwhile, Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen responded that the decision “doesn't change anything for us at home” and emphasized that the island remains under the authority of its people.

Trump’s ambition to acquire Greenland from Denmark dates back to his initial presidential term and has resurfaced in his international discourse since returning to office in January. He has not dismissed the possibility of annexing the island.
