EU Reiterates Denmark’s Sovereignty
During a midday media briefing in Brussels, EU Commission spokesperson Anouar El Anouni avoided directly addressing US decisions but underlined the Union’s long-established stance on the issue.
This statement followed US President Donald Trump’s announcement on Sunday of the designation of a special envoy to the self-governing region.
"It is not for me here to comment on US decisions, but what I can say about the EU position is the following, which has been our long-standing position on the matter that preserving the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark, its sovereignty and the inviolability of its borders is essential for the European Union," El Anouni declared.
Earlier that day, Denmark revealed it would summon Kenneth A. Howery, the American ambassador in Copenhagen, to request clarification after Trump appointed Jeff Landry, governor of Louisiana, as Washington’s special envoy to Greenland, a news agency reported.
Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen characterized the US action as "completely unacceptable," noting that the decision to call in the US envoy was made in coordination with Greenlandic officials.
The minister emphasized that Denmark demands a thorough justification for why Washington designated a special envoy to Greenland despite already having an ambassador stationed in the nation.
